About Osteopathy
Osteopaths are primary care practitioners who consider the vital relationship between the structure and function of the body.
By considering how the structures of the body function together (skeleton, muscles, connective tissues, nerves etc.), osteopaths gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s health and treat using manual medicine tailored specifically to the patient.
They also offer additional therapies including rehabilitation and clinical exercise advice, postural management and nutritional advice to enhance the health of their patients.
-
Osteopaths undergo 4-5 years of University and clinical training and are therefore able to assist in the management of a wide variety of conditions.
Common conditions they treat include:
Lower back pain/sciatica
Neck pain
Headaches
Sports injuries
Muscle and joint injuries (tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis etc.)
Riannon also has additional training and interest in treating:
TMJ/jaw pain
Pregnancy and Post-Partum related pain/conditions
Dance injuries
Children
…and more!
If your have any questions regarding whether osteopathic treatment is right for your condition, feel free to contact us here. -
Osteopaths are manual medicine practitioners who use a variety of techniques targeting the neuro-musculoskeletal system to address pain and restrictions in the body.
These techniques include soft tissue/massage, joint articulation/mobilisation, stretching, dry needling and gentle manipulation.
Taping techniques may also be used where necessary for symptom management post treatment.
(Please note, there is no extra charge for dry needling or taping). -
You will be sent a new patient information form to be completed prior to your first appointment.
At your osteopathic consultation, a full and detailed medical history will be taken, which includes details of your condition and past medical history. As osteopaths work holistically, the medical history is integral to understanding not only your condition but the predisposing and maintaining factors.
Your osteopath will undertake a physical assessment of your area of complaint to identify a likely diagnosis as well as other relevant areas. This consists of range of motion and functional testing as well as areas of muscle tightness etc. Please wear comfortable clothing and note that you may be required to remove some items of clothing during assessment and treatment.
Your osteopath will explain the probable cause for your condition and discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be treated during your appointment (including your first consultation) using the treatment techniques deemed most beneficial to your condition (see above ‘How do osteopaths treat’ for a description of treatment techniques), and ensure your comfort throughout.
Osteopaths frequently provide exercises to be completed at home between appointments, as well as pain/symptom management advice, postural and ergonomic advice, rehabilitation programs and/or nutritional advice, with the view to not only improve your condition in the short term, but to provide you with strategies for self-management and injury prevention.
